FUN FACTS ABOUT BACTRIAN CAMELS

  • Dromedary Camels have one hump that is filled with fat. When food and water is scarce, the camel can live off of this fat storage for up to two weeks
  • Camels can regulate their body temperatures to conserve water. A thirsty camel can drink up to 30 gallons of water in less than 15 minutes.
  • Camels are Ungulates, which are mammals that have hooves. Camel hooves are soft - more like broad toes with nails - and are perfect for walking on sand.
  • Dromedaries have bushy eyebrows, a double row of eyelashes, and the ability to close their nostrils to protect them from desert sandstorms.
  • A camel’s food is not digested the first time it is swallowed, but brought back up from the stomach as cud to be re-chewed.
