I know that Mother’s Day is not for a few weeks yet, but today I wanted to tell you a little bit about our “mama” here at Animal Rentals. Her name is Mrs. Clean and she really takes care of me and all my exotic animal friends of Mindy’s Menagerie. She is really loving, sweet, and small. Mrs. Clean is a Hairless Rat.
A lot of people are scared of rats or think they are unclean or carry diseases. But rats are actually very clean and friendly and incredibly smart…maybe even as smart as monkeys! When I typed that Mrs. Clean just said, “Yes, dear, we are as smart as monkeys but it is not polite to brag about it.” I won’t argue, we never argue with “mama”. She is always right and besides that we wouldn’t want to do anything to upset her because we love her so much.
Anyway, Mrs. Clean is like a cross between Mary Poppins and a schoolteacher and the world’s best grandma. She loves all of us and she is always making sure we are comfortable and happy while we are traveling and that we have and do what we need. She’s the one that always asks, “Did everyone use the bathroom before they got in the van?” And, “Did you all remember to wash yourselves after touching the humans?” And “Does anyone need a snack? I’ve got some nice fruit and nuts right here.”
Back home at Animal Rentals, Mrs. Clean helps us and reminds us too. You will often hear her say things like, “Purse, be sure to brush those big alligator teeth so you can keep your nice, white smile.” And, “Let’s blow a fan on Chi-Chi the Chinchilla so he is not so hot while the rest of us are so cold.” And “Bugsy, you Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches need to stop stealing Mindy’s cookies when she’s not looking.” Mrs. Clean is the best!
She loves people, too…especially children. She really enjoys traveling to all different types of parties, events and locations for our Animal Shows – she thinks birthday parties are the best because she adores kids and cake. Her favorite part of working with Animal Rentals is meeting all the new people and hugging them while they hold her. Most people don’t even realize that they are being hugged by Mrs. Clean – she is so light and gentle and soft! They think they are just holding her but really, she is holding them right back.
That’s our “mama”, Mrs. Clean the Hairless Rat. She just loves and cares about and cares for and takes care of all of us. We are lucky to have her. Next time I’ll tell you about Mrs. Clean’s favorite philosophy and why “Bald is Beautiful”.

The past few weeks have been sort of strange and sad here at Animal Rentals since my Uncle, Mr. Adam Monk, passed away. All of my human and exotic animal friends in Mindy’s Menagerie here sure miss him! But it has been wonderful getting notes from people that knew him. Uncle Monk was one monkey people never forgot meeting!
Uncle Monk was 43 when he left us – which is pretty old for a monkey. Even though he lived to a ripe old age, people say that it is never long enough. The sad truth is, though, that most animals just don’t live as long as humans do. A lot of my tropical bird friends – like Ruby the African Grey Parrot or Piwackett the Scarlet Macaw – can live 60 to 75 years or longer! And there are some whales, giant tortoises and other animals that live for more than 200 years. But most domestic and exotic animals have a much shorter time on earth. So we should be happy that Uncle Monk had 43 years, and an incredible life.
Dad, of course, misses Uncle Monk the most. The two of them started Animal Rentals and built the business together. Of course dad says he did it and Uncle Monk just helped, and of course Uncle Monk said that all the best ideas were his and he was the “real” boss. I really miss all the great advice he gave me – like when I was learning to be an Organ Grinder monkey and Uncle Monk told me to never take the pennies from people, only the “big money”. If someone ever handed him a penny while he was working he would actually throw it right to the ground. If it wasn’t silver or green, he wouldn’t take it. Lol!
Uncle Monk retired years ago, so he never traveled with us for our College Entertainment shows. But he certainly did his share of touring and working with lots of people and celebrities doing Animal Shows, charity events, theme parties, strolling entertainment, fairs, festivals, corporate parties, birthday parties, commercials, tv shows…you name it and Uncle Monk was there putting on a show and making people laugh and smile. I am happy and proud to continue the work he started here at Animal Rentals and to carry on his legacy of making people laugh and smile.
Goodbye Uncle Monk…I love you and I miss you!

What a great summer it’s been so far! Even though dad and I are taking a break from traveling the country doing our College Entertainment shows, we have been really busy appearing at fairs and festivals, private parties, trade shows and lots of other fun events. And of course there is always plenty to do working at the office and taking care of all of my exotic animal friends. But this summer we are also making a lot of fun changes behind the scenes too.
The most fun change for me so far is re-naming the IQ Zoo to Mindy the Monkey’s Menagerie! It’s the most fun because it was my idea. We call it Mindy’s Menagerie for short, but I like the full name better. All of my exotic animal friends are still included, and we are even adding a couple new friends soon. But I think the name Mindy the Monkey’s Menagerie really describes us better. After dad read me the definition from the dictionary, I knew it had to be our new name.
The dictionary says that a menagerie is a collection of wild animals that are kept specifically to be shown to the public. Doesn’t that sound just like us? Of course we do more than just let people look at us…interacting with people is so much fun and an important part of my mission to educate and entertain as an Animal Ambassador. So even though we are more than just ‘props’, menagerie is a perfect name for my group of exotic animal friends.
So Mindy the Monkey’s IQ Zoo is now Mindy’s Menagerie. You can still learn all sorts of fun facts and interesting things about my friends and I at the Mindy’s Menagerie page. And you can still pick your favorite exotic animals for your next party or event there. Everything is still the same but the name!

We have another birthday to be excited about here at Animal Rentals! My friend Jesse James the Geoffroy Cat turns 12 years old today. I hope we get to celebrate with more cake and presents. I really like birthday cake…it is one of my favorite foods!
I just realized that I don’t know if Jesse likes birthday cake or not. I’ve never seen him eat any. Not even at my birthday party. I’ll have to ask him if he likes cake. But I’ll have to catch him at the right time, because you never know whether Jesse James is going to be happy to see you or not!
Jesse’s a great guy and all, but he’s still a little on the wild side. He doesn’t ever really seem to completely relax…even when he’s just lying there, he is always alert and watching everything. Out of all of my exotic animal friends, Jesse James is the toughest. He says that all Geoffroy’s Cats are like that, and that they will never be as tame as domestic house cats – even though they are about the same size. Jesse thinks people should remember that small doesn’t always mean cute and cuddly. ..sometimes it means wild and fierce.
I don’t know if Jesse is really as fierce as he thinks he is, but it’s true that when we do our animal shows at parties, festivals, college entertainment programs and all of the other exciting events that we travel to, people are really drawn to Jesse James because they say he looks like a miniature leopard or cheetah. It is easy for them to forget that he is a wild animal because of his size. The rest of my exotic animal friends and I never forget that, but sometimes people do.
Even though Jesse James likes to act tough, he is a really nice guy and a loyal friend – and everyone here at Animal Rentals really likes him a ton! So we all want to wish him the happiest 12th birthday ever! Won’t you join us in saying “Happy Birthday Jesse James”?!

Dad and I stay pretty busy all year long doing hundreds of different animal shows at parties, fairs, festivals and other events, but our real cross-country traveling starts in the fall with our college tour. Sometimes we are on the road for weeks at a time driving from campus to campus before getting back home for a few days. I love getting to see so much of the United States and meeting so many different people from all different places.
College campuses are really cool – kind of like a whole little town within another town. There’s usually a cafeteria or coffee shop to eat in, a bookstore to shop in, dorms to live in, a gym to exercise in, an auditorium to see plays and concerts in, and thousands of people from all over the world. Most colleges have sports teams that you can cheer for, and lots of them also have fraternities and sororities and other social clubs. There is always something fun and exciting going on.
Most monkeys and some people never get to see any colleges, but I am lucky that I have been to many of them. Just within the past two months dad and I have traveled to Iowa, Virginia, North and South Carolina, Florida, Texas, Georgia and Illinois…and there’s lots more to come over the next few months.
When we go to a college, we always set up in a big area with plenty of room for all the students and faculty that come to meet us. Everyone gets to meet and interact with me and all of my animal friends, while dad teaches the students about us, conservation, and responsible animal ownership. It’s always great fun to see who is brave enough to pick up my friend Cuddles the tarantula first, or hold Purse the alligator. It’s kind of like a big party and everyone has a great time – the people and the animals! Maybe one day I’ll get to meet you at one of our college entertainment shows.

When dad and I do our animal shows, animal displays, events and parties, people have lots of different reactions to my exotic animal friends. Last week I told you that everyone loves Olivia the Opossum because she is so sweet and gentle. This week I’m going to tell you about one of the scariest members of our traveling family, Cuddles the Tarantula.
Cuddles is a Chilean Rose-Haired Tarantula. She is about as big as a human hand – about 5 inches – which makes her very intimidating. She always causes quite a commotion wherever we go. Lots of people scream and jump when they see her, and very few people are brave enough to touch her or hold her. The really funny thing is that Cuddles is actually very calm and gentle. She enjoys walking on people’s hands and arms, and will sometimes just sit quietly on your palm or shoulder.
The thing about Cuddles that people are most afraid of is being bitten by a tarantula, because they’ve heard that it can kill you. While it’s true that tarantulas are venomous, a bite from one is kind of like a mosquito bite or a bee sting – more annoying than deadly. A black widow or brown recluse spider is much more dangerous than a tarantula. Besides that, tarantulas rarely bite. Their first defense is to scrape little barbed hairs from their belly that irritate your skin and can cause a rash and itching. Of course, any animal can bite, so you always have to be respectful of them. But, at least as far as tarantulas are concerned, you really don’t have to be scared of them.
When people finally get the courage to touch or hold Cuddles, they are usually surprised at how fun and friendly she is. Also at how it almost tickles as she walks across their skin. And how she seems more like a family pet than a scary insect. So if you ever get the chance to meet Cuddles or another tarantula, be brave and hold her. You’ll be glad you did and your friends will be amazed!

Last week I promised to tell you a little more about what it is like to live with and take care of exotic animals. In many ways it is not that much different than taking care of domestic pets like cats and dogs. Feeding, watering, cleaning, grooming and training are all a part of dad’s and my everyday life. Today I’m going to tell you about what we do every morning at our house.
The biggest part of our day is spent washing dozens of dishes and preparing food for all of my animal friends that live with us. I help dad wash and cut up and mix all the different fresh fruits and vegetables, and then I get to inspect and taste everything to make sure it is perfect. It takes five or six hours every day to feed everyone and clean up their living spaces. Fortunately, we have wonderful people that work with us and help us, or we would never get finished!
Most of us eat a combination of fresh food and nutritionally balanced commercial food every day. Dad is very good about feeding everyone exactly what they need to stay happy and healthy. We get a good blend of fruits, vegetables, meat, vitamins and minerals, nuts and seeds according to what we like and need. I like pretty much everything, but some of my friends are very fussy about what they eat. Some of them, like the snakes and alligator, will only eat live food. Amy the Armadillo loves crickets, and it is lots of fun watching her run around hunting them! I also share my monkey chow with many of my friends because they really like it. The rats have their own rat chow, and the birds have their own pellets, but the opossum, porcupine, skunk and others love the monkey chow. It is pretty delicious!
Some of my friends – the geoffroy cat, opossum, porcupine and skunk – also eat high protein cat food. For fresh food, we eat just like you do, with whatever fruits and vegetables are in season. Lettuce, green beans, corn, squash, peppers, cantaloupe, watermelon, strawberries, apples, peaches, pears and everything else in the produce section are things that we like. The birds and I also like nuts a lot, and we each have our favorite types. My uncle, Mr. Adam Monk, loves chicken and hamburgers so dad cooks special things for him and always brings him leftovers when we go out to eat.
As you can see, our mornings are very busy with fixing so many different types of breakfast for all of my friends. After everyone has eaten, there is still a lot more to do for the rest of the day. Next time I’ll tell you more about what we do in the afternoons, and how we get ready for our different kinds of animal shows, parties and events – so be sure to come back to my blog next week!

I’ve been lucky enough to meet thousands of people in my job as an Animal Ambassador. Since I always meet them while I am working at one of our animal shows, parties or events, one of the questions people always ask is what my life at home is like. So today I thought I’d tell you a little bit about my daily life with dad.
Just like you, I have free roam of the house. Some of my animal friends have to be separated from each other for safety’s sake, but dad and the dogs and I all get along great and live together in the house. I love playing with the dogs – they are so much fun! My favorite thing is to throw the ball for them and have them bring it back to me. My best friend is Dottie, an Australian Shepherd. We love to curl up together on the couch or a chair after we are all tired out from playing ball.
Some of the other fun games I like to play are pushing stuff off the table, and switching the lamps on and off. I also love to sit in the window and feel the warmth of the sun on my fur while I watch all the cars and trucks and people go by. But even though I love to play and relax, there is always a lot of work to do every day, too. I sleep with dad, so it is easy to wake him up every morning at sunrise so that we can get an early start on our day and have plenty of time for both work and play.
Dad and I eat breakfast together, then I get my shower in the sink. After that we spend several hours feeding, watering and taking care of all of my other animal friends. They are always so happy to see us in the morning and I am sure it is because they missed me overnight and not because I have a big bowl of food in my hands! The birds all yell hello and the alligator smiles and even though it is hard work, it is a lot of fun to help dad take care of everybody.
After everyone is taken care of, dad and I sit down to work in the office together for a while – making calls, setting appointments and planning out the rest of our day. It is a busy life, but a very good life. I really enjoy living and working with dad. Next time I’ll tell you more about taking care of the animals and what we do to get ready for our animal shows, parties, and events – so be sure to check out my blog next week too!

My friend Pokey is a North American Porcupine with her own built-in defense system. She has very sharp quills all over most of her body that protect her from predators and attackers. The quills are really spiny hairs with barbs on the end, like a fish hook. If you have ever gotten stuck by a fish hook or a quill you know that those barbed tips make it very difficult to get out of your skin!
If Pokey feels threatened, she makes all her quills stand up on end, which makes her look huge and bushy and scary. That is enough to make most people and animals run away and leave her alone. No one wants to get stuck by those quills! If something tries to attack her anyway, they will be very sorry because it is very painful to get a hand or face full of porcupine quills.
Obviously it is not a good idea to try to pet a wild porcupine. But my dad and his friend Mark taught me a secret way to pet Pokey without getting stuck by the quills. They teach lots of other people how to do it too, at the animal shows we do at parties, fairs and festivals. So lots of different people have had the wonderful experience of petting Pokey and feeling her wiry hair and spiny quills. Pokey likes to be petted, but you have to be very calm and gentle when you do it so that you don’t startle her. She is a very sweet porcupine but she scares easily.
Have you ever gotten to pet a porcupine? Would you like to?

It’s hardly ever quiet at my house. Dad says he never gets any peace and quiet with me and all of my other animal friends around. But I think that the noisiest ones in the whole house are the parrots. Birds are loud! Luckily they are very funny too, which makes them great company for me and dad.
One of my friends that lives and works with us is a Scarlet Macaw named Piwackett. He is a big, beautiful bird with a really long tail. He always looks like he is dressed in fine jewels, because his feathers are red, green, blue and yellow. One of his special jobs is in the parrots and pirates show, where he gets to stroll around on the shoulder of a pirate and talk to all sorts of interesting people at parties and fairs and other events. He even gets to ride on a pirate ship, which is really cool!
Piwackett is really funny and he talks all the time. In fact, sometimes I wish he wouldn’t talk so much! But people love to hear him talk and laugh. Some people think he is very snooty, because he laughs in a very snobbish “ha, ha, ha” way. But he is actually very friendly and he really likes when people pet and hold him. He loves attention, and if you ignore him he will keep talking until you talk back to him.
Piwackett also likes to dance. When he really likes a song, he will lift up his wings, bob head head around, and shuffle his feet from side to side. He is a very good dancer and sometimes he makes us all jump up and dance around with him. It’s really fun! So even though he is loud, sometimes it is really great to have him around.
Have you ever talked to a bird? What did you say? What did he say?
